Imagine your brain works a bit differently from someone else’s. That’s the main idea behind neurodiversity – it’s about recognising that everyone’s brain is wired uniquely. It’s just different, not wrong.

Down syndrome is a brain difference like autism and ADHD. It’s a genetic condition, meaning it’s something a person is born with. For a long time, people didn’t really understand Down syndrome, and people living with it were judged or looked down on.

But we’re seeing a big shift. Embracing Down syndrome as part of neurodiversity leads to a more inclusive world. It helps us look beyond labels and see the worth and potential in everyone, no matter how their brain works.

When we learn, advocate, challenge stereotypes, get involved, and celebrate differences, we can create a society that fully accepts Down syndrome. This allows people with Down syndrome to develop and use their unique talents and abilities, helping them to flourish and make valuable contributions to society.

A personal journey

When Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg, and his wife heard they were expecting a baby, they were overjoyed. This excitement, however, was soon shaded with a profound moment of reflection. When tests revealed their unborn child had Down syndrome, they were faced with a choice that would redefine their lives.

It was a moment of deep personal reckoning. “Do we keep the baby? My wife took a walk, I also took a walk, and I thought I couldn’t tell her what to do. But I wanted to keep the child. And when she came back, she said, ‘We’re keeping our child’.”

This decision, born from love and conviction, paved the way for a remarkable journey that Prof Mpedi asserts brought immeasurable happiness: “The joy he brought into our lives is incredible. I can’t imagine how life would have been without him.”

However, his family’s experience unveiled the stark realities faced by many parents of neurodivergent children – an environment often marked by judgement, misconceptions, exclusion, and a lack of support.

One particularly poignant anecdote highlights this societal unpreparedness: “We took him to a preschool, and we paid the deposit. Then we got a call…  They told us that they were not equipped to deal with a child like ours and that it was not fair to keep him there.'” This experience underscores a systemic deficit that can isolate families and hinder a child’s early development. Fortunately, they found a welcoming haven in another preschool, Little Star, where their son thrived.

Prof Mpedi acknowledges the privilege that has enabled his family to navigate some of these hurdles. “We can afford to get him the support he needs to develop his unique abilities and realise his dreams. However, the reality for thousands of people with Down Syndrome in South Africa, particularly in underserved communities, is that crucial early interventions remain largely inaccessible.

A critical point Prof Mpedi raises is the narrow perception of neurodiversity itself. While autism and ADHD are increasingly discussed, Down syndrome is often omitted from this vital conversation. “People tend to focus on autism… but Down syndrome is not included in that.” This oversight perpetuates a cycle of misunderstanding and limits the scope of advocacy and resource allocation for individuals with Down syndrome.

The pervasive judgment and lack of understanding in communities deeply concern Prof Mpedi. He laments the archaic beliefs that label children with neurodevelopmental differences as a “disgrace” or a burden, particularly impacting fathers and leading to family breakdowns. He passionately argues that this mindset requires “education and understanding, and support.”

Inclusion, for Prof Mpedi, is a fundamental right. He champions recognising the unique talents and abilities of individuals with Down syndrome. “They’re extremely talented,” he asserts, advocating for their meaningful integration into society and the workplace. He cites examples from other countries where neurodivergent individuals are widely employed by employers who recognise their abilities and the contribution they can make in the workplace.

His son, now a leader at his school, is a testament to the potential that blossoms with the right support. However, the journey doesn’t end after school. Prof Mpedi raises a crucial, often overlooked, concern: “Very few places actually look at what happens to them after school and after their caregivers die if they are not integrated in a community. There are not enough places and workplaces to accommodate them and allow them to learn something.”

To address these challenges, Professor Mpedi emphasises several key solutions, starting with education and awareness.

“My view is that learning is power. We need to educate people, we need people to educate themselves because information is readily available.”

He also speaks proudly of the University of Johannesburg’s contribution through its Neurodiversity Centre*, which provides assessments for neurodivergent children. While this initiative offers critical support, he stresses that “more needs to be done.”

Prof Mpedi’s ultimate message is a powerful call for collective responsibility. He urges individuals, communities, and institutions to collaborate to foster true acceptance and inclusion and pleads with  society to move beyond outdated prejudices and recognise the inherent worth of every individual.

His journey, from that profound moment of choice to advocating for widespread change, serves as a poignant reminder that empathy, understanding, and actionable support are the foundation upon which a truly inclusive society is built – one where every child, and adult, can thrive to their fullest potential.

What is Down Syndrome

Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material alters development, causing the characteristic features and developmental delays associated with Down syndrome. It is a chromosomal variation that occurs randomly during the formation of reproductive cells or early foetal development.
