The beginning of a new year is a good time to re-look your relaxation and fitness activities. You may feel like trying out something new. Starting out with a new sport is an exciting venture. Here is how to choose the right sport for you which will help you stick to it once you’ve started.

Making sure beforehand that you choose the right sport for you will save you the disappointment (and embarrassment!) of giving it up soon after you’ve started. You have to ask yourself the following questions to determine if the sport you chose is right for you:

    • Do you have the time for it? Some activities take much longer than others, for example golf versus squash.
    • Will you really enjoy it? If you’re the type of person who doesn’t like being outside, rather choose an indoor sport.
    • Can you afford it? What will it cost to get all the gear and equipment required and can you afford it?
    • Will you need an instructor to start and what will he/she cost?
    • Do you have the physique for it? For example, someone with a history of knee problems should stay away from running and tennis.
    • How far will you have to travel to participate in your chosen sport? Apart from the cost and time factors of travel, it may also impact on the frequency of participating in this activity.
    • If it is a team sport, can you commit to such an extent that you will always be available for the team?

If your chosen sport is still an option after these questions, you are ready to get started. But remember, if you are fairly unfit and you choose a sport that requires a high level of fitness, it is important to start out slowly and gradually build your fitness and stamina. Don’t try to run the Comrades a month after you’ve started training!
