Whether you are suffering from total burnout or just want to deal with the everyday stress of being a mom, you need “me time” – meaning quiet time, alone time, personal time, self-care time.

Moms are extremely busy these days and devote so much of themselves to everyone else that they forget to take time out for themselves. Moms are in charge of the smooth running of the household and are responsible for the general wellbeing of spouses, children and family pets. However, when mom is tired or upset, the whole house is in turmoil. Rest and relaxation are two things that moms desperately need but often forget to put into their daily schedules.

You may wonder how you will find “me time” amid family obligations and work commitments. The answer is straightforward: schedule time for yourself in your daily planner just as you would schedule an important appointment or school event.

Ways of spending “me time”

Setting aside at least 15 to 30 minutes a day of uninterrupted time gives you an opportunity to de-stress and unwind. The idea of effective “me time” is to use your personal time to participate in an activity that encourages relaxation. You can customise your activity to your liking providing that it is healthy and helps you to unwind. Here are some examples:

    • Read your favourite book or magazine
    • Take an extended bath
    • Visit a bookstore or nursery
    • Listen to music
    • Take a walk
    • Go for a drive
    • Write in your journal
    • Meditate
    • Work on your favourite hobby
    • View a photo album
    • Enjoy a pedicure or manicure
    • Prepare and enjoy your favourite snack
    • Go to the gym
    • Sit on the porch and watch the sunset.

By enjoying “me time” for a few minutes every day you will feel rejuvenated and better prepared to accept the challenge of being a successful wife, mother, housekeeper, business owner, career woman, employee, assistant, friend, sister or daughter for the remainder of the day.
