Many people only discover they have it after serious complications have already set in. Yet, the earlier diabetes is detected, the easier it is to manage and even delay its progression. Knowing what to look out for could save your health \u2013 and your life.<\/p>\n<p>Diabetes is a condition where your body struggles to regulate blood sugar levels. Either your body does not produce enough insulin (the hormone that helps sugar move into your cells for energy) or it cannot use insulin properly. Over time, and if left unchecked, high sugar levels can damage blood vessels, nerves, and eyes \u2013leading to blindness, kidney failure, stroke, or heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>There are two main types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Type 1 diabetes \u2013 usually develops at a younger age, caused by the body\u2019s immune system attacking insulin-producing cells.<\/li>\n<li>Type 2 diabetes \u2013 more common in adults, often linked to lifestyle factors such as poor diet, inactivity, and being overweight, although genetics also play a role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pre-diabetes is a critical warning sign that you are at risk of\u00a0 Type 2 Diabetes \u2013 when blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be classified as Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Early warning signs to watch for<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many early symptoms may seem harmless on their own. However, when they appear together or persist, they should not be ignored.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unusual thirst<\/strong> \u2013 needing to drink far more water than normal<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frequent urination<\/strong> \u2013 especially waking up multiple times at night<\/li>\n<li><strong>Excessive tiredness<\/strong> \u2013 constant fatigue even with enough sleep<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sudden weight changes<\/strong> \u2013 unexpected loss or gain without trying<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blurred vision<\/strong> \u2013 changes in eyesight that come and go<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slow-healing wounds<\/strong> \u2013 cuts, bruises, or sores that take longer to heal<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tingling or numbness<\/strong> \u2013 especially in the hands, feet, or legs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increased hunger<\/strong> \u2013 feeling hungry even soon after eating<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frequent infections<\/strong> \u2013 such as urinary tract or skin infections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Catching diabetes early allows for better control. Lifestyle changes such as healthier eating, more physical activity, weight management, and medical treatment (when needed) can reverse pre-diabetes and\/or\u00a0protect your organs from long-term damage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taking action<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you notice several of these symptoms, do not ignore them. Book a simple blood sugar test with your doctor, local clinic, or\u00a0 opt for health screeing at the workplace. Even if you feel generally well, regular health checks are important, especially if you have risk factors like family history, high blood pressure, or being overweight.<\/p>\n<p>Diabetes does not need to define your future.
