This happens when a blood vessel is either blocked by something like a blood clot (ischemic stroke) or if a blood vessel bursts (haemorragic stroke). If your brain does not get enough oxygen and nutrients from blood supply, parts of the brain can get damaged.

Time lost is brain lost

Every seconhd counts … Te faster someone gets help, the better their chances of survival and recovery. Quick action doesn’t just save lives – it can reduce long-term disability and support a stronger return to health.

When the affected brain cells are being starved of oxygen, these cells begin to die – and they don’t grow back. That’s why immediate action is critical. The sooner treatment begins, the more brain can be saved.

Know the signs – and teach others
The signs of a stroke often appear suddenly. They’re not always painful, but they are serious. Learning these signs – and helping your family, friends, colleagues, and even children recognise them – could save a life.

Remember the word FAST:

Face: Is one side of the face drooping? Ask them to smile.

Arms: Can they lift both arms? Or does one arm drift down?

Speech: Is their speech slurred or strange? Can they repeat a simple sentence clearly?

Time: If you see any of these signs, call emergency services immediately

In South Africa, call 112 from any mobile network or 10177 for an ambulance.

What happens if you act quickly?
Immediate treatment can:

Stop the stroke from getting worse

Reduce the chance of permanent disability

Save more brain function

Open the door to clot-busting treatment (only available within a short time window)

Support better rehabilitation outcomes

What if you’re alone?
Some strokes can also cause sudden or progressive confusion, dizziness, vision loss, or a severe headache. If you feel strange or “not right” – don’t wait. Call for help immediately. Don’t try to “sleep it off” or drive yourslef. Your brain is asking for urgent care.

The person next to you might not know they’re having a stroke – or be too confused to get help. If you spot the signs, you can be the one who takes action. Call the ambulance, stay calm, and give the person the best chance of survival.

We can’t always prevent a stroke. But we can act when we see the signs. Acting fast could save a life – maybe even yours.
