It’s about how we cope, connect, and carry ourselves through life. For women, this can be especially important, as we often experience hormonal cycles and face unique emotional and social pressures that go unnoticed or unspoken. From juggling multiple roles to navigating life transitions, many women carry a silent load every day.

Yet mental health is still too often overlooked or pushed aside, especially when you default to prioritising someone else’s needs above your own.

The silent load women carry
Many women are expected to “keep it all together” — at home, at work, in relationships, and in caregiving. This emotional labour can be invisible but exhausting. It shows up in constant overthinking, sleepless nights, irritability, lack of energy, and even physical symptoms like headaches or muscle pain.

On top of that, hormonal shifts during menstruation, pregnancy, postnatal recovery, and menopause can all affect mental health — sometimes profoundly. These changes are natural, but when they come with anxiety, mood swings, or depression, they shouldn’t be dismissed as “just hormones”.

Without support, problems grow
Without safe, supportive spaces to speak openly, women may internalise their struggles or blame themselves. This can lead to burnout, low self-worth, or untreated depression and anxiety.

Mental health challenges can impact every part of our life — from physical health and parenting to career performance and relationships. The longer these challenges go unacknowledged, the harder it can become to reach out, and the issues can become more complex to resolve.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Speaking up
Acknowledging when you’re not okay takes courage. It’s the first step to feeling better. Prioritising mental health doesn’t mean you’ve failed — it means you’re human. Just as you’d seek help for a physical injury, emotional health deserves the same care and attention.

Talking to someone can offer relief, clarity, and practical ways forward. Whether it’s counselling, a supportive friend, or access to mental health services — support can be life-changing.

Why it matters
Women’s mental health affects families, workplaces, and communities. When we are emotionally well, we are better able to lead, care, create, and thrive. Mental wellbeing supports resilience, boosts confidence, and improves quality of life.

When we prioritise our own mental health, we also create space for others who look to us as role models to do the same.

Support is available — and it’s okay to ask
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, flat, anxious, or just not yourself — you’re not alone. It’s okay to say something. It’s okay to rest. And it’s okay to ask for help.

Get in touch with LifeAssist because your mental health matters. Every day. At every stage.
