Research shows that men are less likely than women to visit a doctor, discuss their health concerns, or seek mental health support. This reluctance has serious consequences, with men facing higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and suicide.

Here’s what every man needs to know about staying healthy.

1. Prioritise your heart health
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men worldwide, yet it is largely preventable with simple lifestyle changes.

Get regular check-ups to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart health.

Eat a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

Exercise for at least 150 minutes a week, including strength training to support heart and muscle health.

Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake to reduce your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

Manage stress through relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or time outdoors.

2. Know your cancer risks
Certain cancers, such as prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer, are more common in men. Early detection saves lives, so regular screenings are essential.

Prostate cancer: The most common cancer in men. From age 40, get a PSA blood test and if your PSR (Prostate Specific Antigen) reading is high, have a digital rectal exam. If you are over 50, include the PSR and digital rectal exam in your annual medical check-up.

Colorectal cancer: Start screenings from age 45, in the form of a colonoscopy, or sooner if you have symptoms of irregular bowel function. A colonoscopy can detect early signs before symptoms appear and enable the removal of polyps before they progress to advanced stages.

Testicular cancer: Most common in younger men (15–40). Perform self-exams monthly and report any lumps or changes.

Breast cancer: Yes, men also need to do breast self-exams regularly and consult a doctor if you find anything of concern.

3. Protect your mental wellbeing
Men are often expected to be “strong” and not show vulnerability, leading many to suffer in silence. However, ignoring mental health can lead to depression, anxiety, and even giving up the will to live (suicide).

Talk about your feelings with friends, family, or a professional. You don’t have to handle everything alone.

Seek help if you feel persistently down, anxious, or overwhelmed. Therapy and support groups can provide relief.

Stay active — exercise is a powerful mood booster that reduces stress and increases resilience.

Limit alcohol and drug use, as substance abuse often worsens mental health struggles.

Check in on others — men often don’t reach out, so be the one to start the conversation.

4. Maintain a healthy weight and prevent diabetes
Obesity and diabetes are on the rise in men, leading to long-term complications like heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney problems.

Watch your waistline — a waist measurement over 94 cm (37 inches) in circumference increases health risks.

Limit sugar, salt, and processed foods and choose whole foods and unprocessed meals.

Monitor blood sugar levels, especially if you have a family history of diabetes.

Stay hydrated and choose water over alcoholic, sugary, or even ‘sugar-free’ drinks.

5. Look after your sexual health
Men’s sexual health is often overlooked, yet conditions like erectile dysfunction (ED) and low testosterone can be early warning signs of other health problems.

Get regular check-ups for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, which can affect sexual function.

Practise safe sex to protect against sexually transmitted infections (STI/HIV).

Talk to your doctor if you experience ED which may indicate underlying health issues. ED can be treated.

6. Don’t ignore regular check-ups
Many men avoid the doctor unless something feels seriously wrong. However, regular health screenings can catch problems early, before they become life-threatening.

Schedule an annual check-up even if you feel fine.

Know your family history — if conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or cancer run in your family, you may need screenings earlier.

Stay up to date with vaccinations, including flu, tetanus, and shingles (if over 50).

Men’s health is more than just avoiding illness or treating chronic disease — it’s about feeling strong, energised, and in control of your wellbeing. By taking small steps today, you can enjoy a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life.

This Men’s Health Month, commit to one change — whether it’s getting a check-up, eating better, exercising more, or opening up about your mental health.
