It’s a lifesaving tool that significantly improves survival rates, quality of life, and treatment outcomes.

Cancer doesn’t announce itself with a neon sign—it often whispers through subtle changes in the body. Many symptoms, such as persistent fatigue, a lingering cough, or unexplained weight loss, may be easy to dismiss as minor ailments. However, these could be the early warning signs your body is giving you. Identifying and treating cancer in its early stages means smaller, localised tumours and a much higher chance of successful treatment.

The Cancers where early detection screening saves lives

Some cancers are more amenable to early detection through established screening programmes. Understanding the risk factors and making regular screenings a priority can be a game-changer.

Breast Cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, but it is also one of the most treatable when detected early. Regular mammograms from the age of 40 (or earlier if you have a family history) are vital. Early-stage breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of nearly 99%, making routine checks a must.

Cervical Cancer is highly preventable and treatable thanks to Pap smears and HPV testing. These screenings detect abnormal cells before they turn cancerous, giving women the opportunity for early intervention. Women should begin regular Pap smears from age 21 or as recommended by their healthcare provider.

Prostate Cancer is one of the leading cancers in men, but early detection through Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing and digital rectal exams can identify it before symptoms appear. Men over 50—or 40 if they have a family history—should speak to their doctors about screening options.

Colorectal Cancer often develops from precancerous polyps in the colon or rectum. Screenings such as colonoscopies help detect and remove these polyps before they turn into cancer. Screening is typically recommended from age 45 but may start earlier for those with risk factors or a family history.

Skin Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, but it’s also one of the most preventable and detectable when caught early. Watch for changes in the size, shape, or colour of moles, or the appearance of new spots that itch, bleed, or don’t heal. The “A-B-C-D-E” rule—Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter over 6mm, and Evolving features—can help identify suspicious growths. Protecting your skin with sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure are also critical in reducing your risk.

Pay Attention to Persistent Symptoms

Screenings aren’t the only way to detect cancer early. Listening to your body and addressing persistent or unexplained symptoms is equally important. Watch for:

A persistent cough or hoarseness lasting more than three weeks

Unexplained lumps or swelling anywhere in the body

Changes in bowel or urinary habits

Unusual bleeding or discharge

Persistent pain that doesn’t improve with treatment

If something feels off, don’t ignore it—schedule a check-up. Early intervention is the key to catching cancers at a stage when they are most treatable. With so much on our plates, it’s easy to put health checks on the back burner. Early detection isn’t just about finding cancer—it’s about empowering yourself with knowledge and taking control of your health.

If you would like to ask any questions about the screening process or need assistance to explain results, or if you need a recommendation from a health coach to support your recovery, then contact LifeAssist for a free consultation with a dietician, or biokineticist.

[354,46,45

post-34289","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-2025-feb-newsletter-fw","category-your-wellness-her-health","category-your-wellness-his-health
["GET
