They may:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start conversations on social media, gaming platforms, or messaging apps.<\/li>\n<li>Hand out compliments to make victim feel special<\/li>\n<li>Move the chat to a more private space.<\/li>\n<li>Send fake images or videos to gain trust.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage the victim to share intimate images.<\/li>\n<li>Threaten to share those images unless demands are met \u2013 often asking for money or more content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These scams can move very quickly, sometimes within hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is at risk<br \/>\n<\/strong>Sextortion can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. However, teenagers are especially vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>Criminals often target young people because they are still developing emotional resilience, may be more trusting online, and can be deeply affected by threats to their reputation or friendships. For some, the shame and fear caused by sextortion can be so overwhelming that it leads to isolation, depression, and in tragic cases, suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Talking openly about this crime before it happens can be the difference between a child suffering in silence and reaching out for help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why open conversations matter<br \/>\n<\/strong>Because sextortion is a relatively new crime, many parents have never experienced anything like it growing up. Children may worry that their parents won\u2019t understand or will judge them harshly. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to normalise the topic as part of everyday online safety discussions.<\/p>\n<p>You can say things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cYou\u2019re growing up in a different world from the one I knew. There are people online who target young people, and it\u2019s not your fault if they try with you.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf anyone ever sends you a message, picture, or video that makes you uncomfortable, please know you can come to me straight away \u2013 I will believe you, and we\u2019ll work through it together.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThese scams are common. Good people get caught up in them all the time.
