However, don&#8217;t be the one they wave away with a sigh of relief when you depart \u2013 be a responsible tourist; it&#8217;s easier than you think!<\/p>\n<div id=\"all\">\n<div id=\"main\">\n<div class=\"item-page\">\n<p><strong>Aim to please<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Responsible tourism refers to the impact tourists have on the places and people they visit. If you are a responsible tourist, the impact will be positive and mutually beneficial and you will be welcomed back with open arms. Being a responsible tourist is not difficult at all. It consists of being considerate of the environment, local people and their culture and displaying a generous dose of common sense and good manners!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsible tourism tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few tips to get you started:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Do your homework. Familiarise yourself with the country, people and customs of the country you are visiting, before you leave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Try to learn a few phrases in the local language. &#8220;Hello&#8221;, &#8220;please&#8221; and &#8220;thank you&#8221; will open many doors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Always be respectful when addressing people, especially the elderly and those serving you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Tip generously but not extravagantly. Find out what the going rate is and, if you wish, top it up a little but try not to give less than expected. Be careful about giving money to beggars, especially children. Ask the locals for advice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Spread your money around; try different local restaurants and shops and buy locally produced goods and services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Beware of buying products made of endangered species or plants or obtained through unethical labour practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Do not take &#8220;trophies&#8221;.&#8217; (plants, animals, sea shells, etc.) from places you are visiting. Rather buy copies in your local souvenir shop. Remember, the old adage of taking nothing but photographs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Ask before you take photos of local people; many expect a tip and will feel insulted if you decline to pay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Bargaining may be common in certain cultures but don&#8217;t turn it into a contest. Pay a fair price that both parties are happy about.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Be extra careful when visiting holy places such as churches, temples or sacred grounds. Find out how you should dress and how you should behave to prevent insulting locals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Be careful where you smoke and drink alcohol. Smoking is prohibited in many areas and countries. Some communities also have strict laws about the use of alcohol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Do be responsible when visiting wilderness areas or game reserves. Keep your distance when spotting wild animals and don&#8217;t try to feed them unless you want to lose some fingers. Always obey game rangers and tourist guides.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Do not litter, either in urban or outdoor areas or at the beach. Many wildlife and marine species are very vulnerable to man-made litter that can endanger their survival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Never buy drugs unless you are prepared to spend the next 20 years of your life in prison.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Always remember that you are a guest.
