If you have a disability, you may live with challenges that other people don’t and therefore don’t understand. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t live a fulfilling and happy life. The World Health Organisation estimates that over a billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, so you are not alone. No matter what your disability is, you are still in control of your life. There are ways to overcome the emotional and physical stress that come with having a disability:

  • Try to focus on the things you can do rather than the things you can’t do. Pick a new hobby, study a short course, or spend time volunteering;
  • Celebrate the progress you make, from the small things to the big things. Learning to live with a disability is no small feat and you deserve a pat on the back;
  • You can’t change the past and worrying about the future isn’t helpful either. Focus on the present and what you can do now to create the life you want;
  • Ask for support. The reality is that you may need to deal with limitations and that can be difficult. Asking for help from friends and family will make the emotional burden feel lighter;
  • Don’t ignore your feelings. If you are struggling then reach out for professional support sooner rather than later.
