Be Aware: How can COVID-19 Impact Our Brains?

We all know by now to watch out for the physical symptoms of the COVID-19 virus: coughing, fever, aches and pains. But doctors have discovered that the virus can affect our brains as well. Here are the signs to look out for, as well as some tips for improving your mental health.

COVID Symptoms Affecting the Brain

Cases around the world have shown a variety of conditions related to the brain and central nervous system in COVID patients. These include:

  • Mental confusion
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Trouble focusing
  • Headaches
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Changes in behaviour

These symptoms may be caused by issues like inflammation and low oxygen levels, which can be associated to severe COVID-19 infections. Now more than ever, it’s important to follow proper hygiene and social distancing, to protect yourself and others from catching the virus.

During these stressful times, here are some useful tips for boosting your mental health.

Tips for a Happy & Healthy Brain

  • Exercise regularly, as physical activity reduces stress, boosts immunity and improves brain health.
  • Eat a balanced diet with lots of ‘brain foods’ like fatty fish, grains, fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Get 7 to 8 hours of good quality sleep a night, and stick to a regular sleep schedule.
  • Limit your screen time, especially before bed.
  • Exercise your brain with crossword puzzles, word searches or other mentally stimulating activities you enjoy.
  • Reading books and listening to music also helps to stimulate your brain.
  • Stay connected to your loved ones, to prevent feelings of isolation and loneliness.

If you start to notice confusion or forgetfulness in yourself or someone you know, seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
