Fighting the Stigma around Mental Illness

Today, more people are speaking out about mental illness and the importance of understanding mental health matters.

Unfortunately, many people struggling with mental illness still feel misunderstood, misjudged and stigmatised. These negative feelings can often stand in the way of someone seeking proper help.

What is Stigma?

Stigma is a negative stereotype that causes people to view those with certain traits (like mental health problems) in a negative way. These feelings are often based on misinformation and myths about mental illness.

Stigma can lead to bullying and discrimination, which can make it harder for people with mental illness to speak up and get the treatment they need.

By busting the myths and breaking the stigma, we can all do our part to better support  mental health and thereby make the world a kinder and more understanding place.

Here are some ways you can start doing this today:

How to Fight Stigma

  • Talk openly and positively about mental health matters, as well as encourage others to do the same.
  • Educate yourself about mental health and mental illness.
  • Educate others when you get the opportunity.
  • Speak to mental health advocates in your community.
  • Get involved with a local charity or NGO that focuses on promoting mental health.

It’s up to all of us to break down the stigma around mental illness, so that everyone has the chance to seek treatment and enjoy a healthier state of mind.
