We live in an increasingly violent society where you can never be too careful, especially if you are a woman. There are certain things that you can do to keep yourself safe.
Women have a sixth sense. It’s that feeling that you get when something doesn’t feel right. Learn to trust your instincts because it can help to keep you safe when you are in a sticky situation. Besides your instinct, there are a number of other things that you can do to keep yourself safe.
Better safe than sorry
Here are a few safety tips:
-
- Always be aware of your surroundings. Studies have shown that criminals are very skilled at targeting a victim who appears to be unaware of what is going on around him or her
-
- When you are in the parking lot, don’t sit in your car making a shopping list or talking to someone on your cell phone. Get out of your car and into the mall or building
-
- Have your car keys ready before returning to your car. This way you don’t have to fumble through your bag for your keys and, therefore, give your attacker the chance to catch you off guard
-
- When you get back to your car, look through the windows before getting in. Check the back seat and floor as well as the floor in front of the passenger seat. Look under your car as well
-
- Keep your car’s doors locked while driving and keep the windows up when stopping at a stop sign or robot
-
- Keep your car in good working condition to prevent it from breaking down and leaving you stranded at the side of the road
-
- When using an elevator, don’t stand at the back. Stand near the doors at the side where the elevator’s buttons are so that you can easily get out when something doesn’t feel right or you are in trouble. If it doesn’t feel safe to get into the elevator, don’t
-
- Always have your cell phone with you. Make sure its battery is charged and there is enough airtime on the phone so that you can make a call
-
- When going on a blind date, go to a place where you know there are lots of people. Arrange to meet each other at the venue instead of him picking you up at your place
-
- When walking somewhere, walk as though you know where you are going. Keep your head up and look confident
-
- Don’t jog alone. Get someone to join you and jog where there are other people around
-
- Change your routine regularly. Criminals will watch a home for a certain period of time to discover your pattern of comings and goings.
Protect yourself
Don’t try to overcome the attacker if he points a gun at you or put a knife to your throat. You may have to go along with his demands for a while until you get a chance to escape. Only act when there is a reasonable chance to get away.
-
- Poke the person in the eyes and, if it is a man, kick him in the groin
-
- Attract attention to you and your attacker by yelling or throwing a stone through a car or store window
-
- If the attacker wants your handbag, throw your bag in one direction while you run in the other direction
-
- Attend a self-defense course where you get practical advice about how to defend yourself when being attacked.
