Most people end up with much more in their shopping cart than there was on their lists. Just think how much you can save if only you could stick to that list.

Did you know that there’s a whole science behind the shopping experience? The psychology of buying behaviour is being utilised by supermarkets and shops to get you to part with your money without realising that you are buying something that you don’t really need and perhaps not even want!

The best advice is to draw up a shopping list beforehand and then to stick to it. In addition, the following may be helpful:

    • Supermarkets often put the most expensive products on the eye level shelves. Take your time when you shop and go through the different brands of each product in order to get the best priced ones. (Remember that the cheapest products aren’t always a good buy, the box or tin may in fact contain far less than other products)
    • Buying bulk is a good way to save if you have the space at home, as long as you stick to products that won’t spoil
    • If you have children, rather leave them with a babysitter when you go shopping. It will prevent you from buying toys or sweets to prevent them from making a scene or simply because you can’t stand the moaning
    • Don’t go shopping while you are hungry, because you might end up buying junk food that you crave at that moment
    • Of course you sometimes forget to put something on your shopping list and only remember that you need it when you see it on the shelf, but how often do you buy sweets and delicatessens that you don’t really need? A ha, gotcha!
