It’s never too late to start planning your career! It’s a rewarding and positive experience that should be done on a regular basis – not only in high school or at university.

Here are a few things you can do to develop your career:

    • Read extensively. By staying abreast of the developments in your field, you will have a decided advantage over those who simply don’t bother.
    • Provide what is required. Make a study of your company to find areas where your unique skills are certain to have an effect.
    • Map your path since you last planned your career. Are you happy with your path? Could you have done things better? What might you have done differently? What can you do differently in the future?
    • Set goals. Develop a roadmap for your job and career success by setting short-term (in the coming year) and long-term (beyond a year) career and job goals. Review and adjust these goals as your career plans progress or change, and develop new goals once you accomplish your previous ones.
    • Review career and job trends. A career path that is expanding today could easily shrink tomorrow – or next year. It’s important to see where job growth is expected in the fields that most interest you. It will empower you to adjust and strengthen your position. One of the keys to job and career success is having a unique set of accomplishments, skills and education that make you better than all others in your career.
    • Research further career/job advancement opportunities. One of the really fun outcomes of career planning is picturing yourself in the future. Where will you be in a year? In five years? Look within your current employer and career field, but do not be afraid to look beyond to other possible careers.
