Some people carry the world on their shoulders, hence the quote “For peace of mind, resign as general manager of the universe” (Larry Eisenberg). Fact is, it’s impossible for any human to plan, administer and manage the universe. World leadership, however, is possible.

Whereas managers see to the day-to-day running of businesses, leaders are those people who innovate, develop, motivate and pioneer new courses that others can follow. Experts say that leaders are born with some qualities while other characteristics can be developed.

Most South African companies have a shortage of leaders and therefore everybody with leadership potential should be developed.

Recognising a leader

    • Leaders see the bigger picture, the mission of the team, group or company, and know what the consequences will be if this mission is not achieved.
    • They have a vision in mind for the team and communicate this vision to the other members of the team.
    • They remain focussed on the objectives of the team. They take control of the course that the team takes.
    • Leaders are in control of their emotions.
    • Leaders are not afraid to act and take innovative decisions.
    • They know how to work under pressure.
    • Leaders demonstrate their willingness to help others develop, also as new leaders.
    • Leaders are involved with the others in the team and motivate them to participate.
    • True leaders are known for their honesty and trust.

Are you a leader?

Answer the questions below to determine if you are a leader, but remember that you can also develop into one if that’s what you want to be.

    • Can you formulate a vision and motivate others to share in your vision?
    • Are you committed to this vision?
    • Do you invest a lot of energy into achieving this vision and can you inspire others to do the same?
    • When you notice a problem, do you look for the most practical solution that enables the continuation of the work or project?
    • Can you make decisions quickly to help along the job or process?
    • Are you prepared to take responsibility for your actions?
    • Are you respected by the people in you team?
    • Are you a good listener? Do you ask questions and are you interested in the answers that you get?
    • Do others see you as a role model? Do they look up to you?
    • Can people trust you?
    • Can you recognise leadership qualities in others and develop them?
    • Do others consider you their mentor?
    • Do you like to share your knowledge with others?

If you’ve answered “yes” to most of these questions, you are probably already in a leadership position or you have leadership potential. If you think that your leadership qualities are overlooked, discuss the situation with your supervisor or HR manager.
