New travel destinations, expense account meals and an excuse to get out of the office are synonymous with business trips! But business travel can quickly derail your healthy lifestyle due to poor food choices.

The good news is that it’s easier than you think to stay on track while you travel. Here are some simple tips to keep you feeling great:

    • Look for real food at the airport. Steer clear from packaged food and processed snacks. Raw, unsalted nuts and fruits are high in protein, healthy fats and fibre to keep you satisfied longer between meals.
    • Stay hydrated at all times. Airplane air can be very dehydrating, so drink plenty of water. Thirst can sometimes be mistaken for hunger.
    • Eat breakfast during your business stay. Skipping a morning meal can leave you starving for junk food later in the day. Hard-boiled eggs, whole-wheat toast, fruit and yogurt are all good options and available at most hotels.
    • Stick to your regular eating schedule. Try to plan your business meals with clients at a time you would normally have lunch or dinner.
    • Look out for nutrition information. Most chain restaurants are required to provide nutrition information for their meals and snacks onsite and/or online.
    • Ask for substitutions. Many restaurants and delis will let you substitute fruit or salad for fries or bread.
    • Choose healthy preparation methods. Look for words on menus like “grilled”, “steamed”, “baked”, “roasted”, “poached” and “broiled” instead of “fried” and ask for your dressings and sauces on the side of your meal so you can control the portions.
    • Make use of hotel gyms and pools. Always pack a pair of trainers and use your spare time for a quick workout.
    • Go for a walk or jog before your day starts with business obligations. It is a great opportunity to explore a new place, especially if you do not have time for sightseeing.
    • Do some yoga exercises. They are good for focus and relaxation if you have a busy schedule during your trip.
    • Pace yourself at happy hour. Many work functions revolve around alcohol, but wine, beer and mixed drinks are all loaded with kilojoules. Avoid alcohol, or keep it to a minimum and have a glass of water before having another alcoholic beverage.
    • Try to get a good night’s sleep. You will function much better and with a clearer mind when you are rested and refreshed.

It is important to try and maintain your normal healthy lifestyle in terms of dietary choices, meal sizes and frequencies. Exercise and rest as much as possible when travelling.

Do not use a business trip as an excuse to “fall off the wagon” when it comes to making choices that affect your health.
