We all know how vital grooming and looking our best is. Unfortunately, there are a few very common grooming mistakes women make that can undo all their best efforts.

Importance of personal grooming

Personal grooming has been described as “tending carefully to one’s person and dress – to make neat or tidy”. It is about presenting oneself in the best possible way.

Proper grooming actually turns the spotlight on to your personality while bad grooming turns the attention to your appearance and illuminates the grooming mistakes you make. So, make sure people get to know the real you by eliminating these bad grooming mistakes.

Nasty body and other odours

Body odours can be truly offensive and will have everyone in close proximity squirming. What’s worse is that people will make the assumption that you are too lazy to keep yourself clean.

Reeking of perfume

Do keep in mind that most people are very sensitive to smells. You don’t want to turn people in your vicinity to hay fever tears or see them succumb to an allergy attack when you trot past. Although very unfair and mostly untrue, overpowering heady perfume may also conjure up memories of femme fatales and worse!

Hair − here, there and everywhere

Facial hair on women is not attractive and should be removed. Armpits and legs should be shaved and bikini lines waxed. Your crown of glory should  be kept neat, clean and shiny – dirty, stringy, oily hair is a real put off. Inappropriate hairstyles can make or break your look so do get professional help in choosing a style that compliments the shape of your face and texture of your hair. If you colour your hair, be sure to get those tell-tale roots done regularly.

Dirty finger and toe nails

Dirty, overly long finger and toe nails are not appreciated at all. Clean, polished and buffed nails are, however, admired by all. If your hobby (gardening, floristry, etc.) stains your nails, try to cover up with nail varnish as best you can.

Too much or too little make-up

Aim for a fresh, natural and healthy appearance. Do remember that less is more but that zero make-up can make you look pale, tired and washed out. Make sure your make up is done properly and neatly, is free of smudges and that zits and red patches are concealed. You may use slightly heavier make-up in the evening.

Eye brows plucked out of existence or not at all

Eyebrows should be shaped about once in six weeks or even sooner if you have a mono-brow (hair in between the eyebrows). Do keep the shape natural or ask for help from a beautician. Remember, the naked look (no eye brows) went out with Queen Elizabeth the first and eyebrows drawn in with a pencil when silent movies hit the dust.

Inappropriate dressing

Personal grooming also implies dressing well, elegantly and appropriately. Low cut, tight, see-through and in other ways revealing clothing is best worn at home or on the beach. If you don’t, you will have all eyes in the boardroom or office on your bum, bust or other booty on display.

Other bad fashion faux pas include wearing dirty, un-ironed clothes with tears, holes and stains, scuffed or dirty shoes, oversized grubby old handbags and a gypsy-load of jewellery and other bling. Do dress in age and occasion-appropriate clothing that enhances your figure and build.

When famous fashion designer, Christian Dior was asked what the key to good dressing is, he said: “There is no key! If there were it would be too easy, rich women could buy the key and all their fashion worries would be over! But simplicity, grooming and good taste − the three fundamentals of fashion − cannot be bought. But they can be learnt, by rich and poor alike.”
