Discrimination is dehumanising. When you treat people differently solely based on their race, you deny their value as an individual. Each of us can play an important role in ending discrimination against those with whom we live and work.
Take an active stance
-
- Read news articles intelligently. Understand that every author has a bias. Check to see what the bias is and how the bias might have affected the content of the article. Try to confirm all news articles with other sources to ensure that you do not draw conclusions based on biased news stories.
-
- Think about the source of your racism. The cause of racism is usually growing up in a racist environment, surrounding yourself with peers who have racist attitudes, or looking for someone else to blame for your problems.
-
- Understand the devastating consequences of racism and tribalism. Be prepared to explain those consequences with people and forgive those of other races or tribes who have hurt you or have hurt people of your race or tribe.
-
- Visit a social club or place of worship that has members from different races to find out what you have in common and to celebrate one another’s differences and strengths.
-
- Be willing to share the political power and resources with all people.
-
- Speak out when racially motivated hate crimes take place. Write letters to the editors of newspapers expressing your disapproval of racism.
-
- Never say anything negative or derogatory about things that are outside the control of certain people.
-
- Become more aware of discrimination. When you witness it, try to remedy the situation.
-
- Offer support to those whom you know are being discriminated against. However, it could be dangerous to get involved if someone is actually being attacked. Stay on the side-lines and call the police.
-
- Learn more about the contributions people from different racial groups made to the development of Southern Africa.
-
- Choose your friends carefully. Avoid people who discriminate against people of a different race and perhaps expand your circle of friends to include people of other races.
-
- If possible, perform some task with someone against whom you are prejudiced to help heal the divide.
