Last year high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise peaked as the top fitness trend. Are you curious about what’s going to be hot in fitness circles this year? Here are the top trends for 2015.
Body weight training
Although resistance training has been part of the fitness regime for centuries, it has now become popular in all kinds of gyms. The best of it all is that you do not really need a gym for this top trend. You can do it anywhere − there is nothing stopping you from doing squats, lunges, push-ups and pull-ups at home while busy with other activities. That means you can do squats while you brush your teeth and plank while you are waiting for water to boil.
High-intensity interval training (HIIT)
High-intensity interval training will still be popular. It involves short bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by a short period of rest or recovery. It is usually all over in less than 30 minutes. The reason for its success is because it is super effective. People are exercising in shorter bursts and they are still seeing results.
Personal training
Sure, we could do push-ups at home, but most people would prefer to do them with a trainer − and as more trainers become educated and certified, they become more accessible in all sectors of the health and fitness industry. While personal training can be expensive, having a personal trainer is the motivating factor some people need to get to the gym.
Strength training
Strength training can be added to most workouts to improve or maintain strength, but the benefits go beyond the gym. Weight training can help everything from your mood to your memory. Many health and fitness professionals incorporate some form of strength training into a comprehensive exercise routine for their clients and patients.
Digital engagement
Our lives are becoming ever more reliant on technology and keeping fit is no exception. There are thousands of GPS fitness-tracking apps and more integrated ways to measure fitness, including biometric wristbands such as FitBit, Flex and Nike Fuelband.
Gaming has also become popular among regular exercisers, so former gym bunnies have entered the world of points, levels and leader boards, connected via technology, to raise competitiveness among users. Fitocracy, for instance, is an online game and social network that allows people to start following other users, comment on their sessions and even play against others, whether it’s skateboarding, running or cycling.
Recovery plans
With HITT workouts leaving us sore and perhaps even injured, recovery or self-care plans are going to be big in the fitness scene this year. Recovery exercises like restorative yoga will be all the rage. In 2015 you will see even more information and products aimed at fitness recovery for optimal results, think foam rolling, ice baths, massage, heat and other strategies to speed up and optimise the recovery and rebuilding process.
Treadmill training
First there was spin classes, soon we will be flocking to treadmill classes. Indoor group running has been steadily gaining momentum. People are running together on treadmills doing a structured class led by a group fitness instructor. These classes are truly beneficial, helping to improve your running through speed, incline and interval-based drills.
Exercise and weight loss
Fitness industry professionals and exercisers alike are getting more serious about nutrition. In 2015 the exercise-diet link will come full circle. For lasting health and weight loss, both components are necessary.
