What did we do before apps? Were we totally disorganised, not knowing how much money was left in our bank accounts and buying items at full price? Unbelievable to think there was a pre-apps time.

These days we are incredibly lucky, because when it comes to being organised and proactive with our finances there are so many great apps out there to help us reach our money goals. Starting to track the money you spend is one of the simplest first steps you can take. Once you see how much is going where, you can decide on where to cut down on wasteful expenses.

Here are seven apps that will simplify your financial life.

Mint.com (for iPhone and Android)

This is an all-in-one financial manager. It allows you to keep track of all your spending by bringing together all your expenses and savings into a single graph. You can see exactly where your money is going so that you can budget for each month. Alongside its security features, Mint will alert you if there are any irregularities in your spending.

ATM Hunter (for iPhone, Android and Blackberry)

If you’re in an unfamiliar city and you need to get money, this app will help you find the closest ATM locations. The app tracks your location so you only have to select where you want to access one.

Plendi (for iPhone, Android and Blackberry)

If you are struggling to keep track of your receipts and working out where exactly your money is going, Plendi allows you to save them online. Just snap an image and the app will process the details. The amounts will then be uploaded onto a spreadsheet which contains all your purchases.

Currency + Free (for iPhone)

This app is designed for those who travel regularly. Supporting over 150 different currencies, the app regularly updates itself to keep track of any changes in the exchange rate. It can also factor in transaction fees and tax automatically because many banks and exchange offices charge a fee. Doing so gives you a better idea as to how much you have to really pay before you “convert” your money.

eWallet (for iPhone and Android)

If you need a secure place to store your passwords and usernames in case you forget them, this is the app for you. The app also keeps track of all your security questions and answers for your accounts, and uses 256-bit AES encryption to ensure your personal information doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

Mortgage Calculator (for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad [requires iOS 4.2 or later])

It is considered to be the number-one free mortgage calculator. Whether you are a realtor or a client, this app will calculate a mortgage in the most basic way possible.

Venmo (for iOS and Android)

This app makes it possible to instantly pay people back. Search for friends by phone number, email or Facebook to send payments. Send money fee-free when you use a major debit card. Receiving money is always free. Your friends can use Venmo to pay you back instantly, but you still get the rewards points for the purchase.
