The holiday season means plenty of food … and often weight gain. With a few simple tricks, however, you can look a little skinnier while losing those extra kilos gained.
-
- Start by standing up straight; pull in your stomach and keep your shoulders back. Good posture makes you look slimmer.
-
- Wear clothes that draw the eye up and down rather than from side to side. Use single-color schemes. This could mean wearing one solid, dark color such as brown, navy or black or different tones of the same color. Stock up on V-neck tops and other vertical necklines that elongate your torso.
-
- Choose underwear that offers support. This is especially important when selecting a bra. Avoid bikini bottoms and thongs. Choose cuts that create a tighter, smoother appearance such as boy shorts and briefs. A body shaper that slips over your stomach and thighs is especially helpful for special occasions but may be a little excessive for daily wear.
-
- Buy the right size. Clothes that are too tight show every excess kilogram and clothes that are too baggy make you look heavier than you actually are.
-
- Introduce a little black into your wardrobe. Black has a slimming effect, especially black trousers, skirts and dresses, but don’t overdo it. Too much black can create a drab, depressing look; accent it with other colours and jewellery.
-
- If you’re short, avoid jewellery that makes you looked weighed down. If you’re a big girl, dainty jewellery will be lost on you; stick to two or three chunky items.
-
- Wear the flared pants that are now in fashion or look for a straight-leg, boot-cut, that pulls the observer’s eyes down and away, creating an overall leaner look.
-
- Hide problem areas. For instance, if you carry excess weight in your stomach, look for tunics and wraps that glide over your stomach without drawing attention to it. Choose clothes that mask your problem areas without adding too much bulk.
-
- Accentuate your positive features. If you have firm legs, show them off by raising your skirt’s hemline a few centimetres. If you have a well-defined waist, look for nipped waistlines and belts that really call attention to it. By drawing attention to the most slender parts of your body, you create the illusion of overall slenderness.
-
- Wear high or wedge-heeled shoes to create a leaner look. Avoid strappy sandals, kitten heels and shoes with ankle straps. Stick to closed styles that have a decent amount of height to slim down your foot.
-
- Draw attention to your face with the right make-up. Blend cream bronzer under your jawline and cheekbones to make your face look more angular and wear your hair in a high ponytail or half “updo” to give your face an instant lift.
-
- Copy fashion models by angling your arms and legs to create a slimmer appearance. Crossing your legs when sitting, for example, will make you look slimmer.
