The essential oil of this pretty plant, Pelargonium graveolens, is obtained by steam distillation from the leaves. It is a pale green oil and has a delightful, fresh, green aroma. It blends very well with lavender and bergamot.

Like most flower oils, geranium has antidepressant, astringent and antiseptic properties, promoting quick healing, and is valuable when treating injuries. The oil is often used in skincare because it balances the production of sebum, making it useful for both very dry and very oily skin types.

Geranium has a balancing effect on the hormonal system and is often used to relieve pre-menstrual tension. Owing to its stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, it also helps relieve the excessive fluid retention many women experience at this time.

It is a great oil to use in winter to stimulate the circulatory system. In summer it works as an aromatic insect repellent.

Four to six drops of geranium essential oil dropped into the bath while the water is running will give a beautiful aroma to relax in. You can also add the essential oil to a carrier or base oil such as sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil for a wonderfully pampering and skin nourishing bath.

Caution: Since geranium oil has a balancing effect on the hormonal system, it is best not to be used during pregnancy.

Please contact a qualified aromatherapist if you are at all unsure on how to use aromatherapy essential oils.
