Mom, I’m bored! Here are some simple, easy and inexpensive ways to keep the children occupied over the holidays.
Activities to keep kids busy during the school holidays
-
- Organise neighbourhood backyard camps. This is a good way for working parents from three or four families to share childcare duties and get the children out of the house and enjoying the outdoors. Each participating family can host the camp on a specific day of the week and has the responsibility to set up camp, plan activities and provide meals.
-
- Teach them to knit, crochet or master some other craft. All you need is a needle or two and some inexpensive yarn, and it’s good for their fine motor skills too. Paper-folding or origami is another art they can try – origami paper sets are inexpensive and patterns for projects are available on the Internet.
-
- Hone their culinary skills. They have to eat three times a day anyway, so find some simple recipes and let them prepare their own snacks and meals. Older kids could prepare simple suppers too. If adult supervision is available, they can attempt some more advanced recipes or try their hand at baking.
-
- Organise community busy bees. Get a group of children together to visit the local old age home or church and help out with some light jobs around the yard or buildings. They could provide some entertainment too.
-
- Make a holiday diary. All you need for this activity is an inexpensive exercise book and basic stationery. Let them record every day what they have been up to during the holidays. They can stick movie and entry tickets from excursions, photos and other mementoes in the diary along with their reflections on events.
And, if all else fails, perhaps you could drop them off at the grandparents!?
