Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra copy of one chromosome, namely chromosome 21. This extra copy changes how the baby’s body and brain develop, which can cause mental and physical challenges for the child.
Children with Down syndrome usually have an IQ in the mild to moderate low range and are slower to speak than other children. However, they can eventually lead productive and fulfilling lives well into adulthood.
Giving birth to a child with Down syndrome can be extremely challenging, especially if the condition has come as a surprise. If you need advice or help with caring for your child, you should speak to your doctor, social worker or other health professionals.
Tips for parents
-
- Learn about Down syndrome. The more you know, the more you can help your child
-
- Love and play with your child. Take your child places, read together and have fun
-
- Encourage your child to be independent, for example, learn your child self-care skills such as getting dressed and personal grooming
-
- Give your child chores, for example doing laundry. Explain and demonstrate step-by-step what to do, offer help when needed and praise when things go well
-
- Work with professionals who are working with your child. Services early in life will often help babies and children with Down syndrome to improve their physical and intellectual abilities. These include speech, occupational and physical therapy
-
- Find out what your child is learning at school and look for ways to apply it at home. For example, take your child to the supermarket and demonstrate the concept of money by letting him/her help you to keep track of the money you are spending
-
- Look for social activities in the community. Joining in and taking part will help your child develop social skills and have fun
-
- Talk with other parents who have children with Down syndrome for practical advice and emotional support
-
- Search on the internet for organisations that offer help or have support groups
-
- Be patient and hopeful. Your child has a whole lifetime to learn and grow
-
- Take pleasure in your beautiful child. Children with Down syndrome have a special light within – give your child the opportunity to shine.
