Preventing snake bites
Approximately 5.5 million people are bitten by snakes each year, resulting in 400,000 amputations and between 20,000 and 125,000 deaths. This means that snake bite kills at least 300 people and may be responsible for as many as 1100 amputations every day world wide.

With this as its theme, the 2010 celebrations of World Environment Day on 5 June will focus on the fantastic diversity of life on earth and specifically the role of the human race in protecting all creatures great and small and the ecosystems that support them.
Do's and (mostly) dont's of fireworks
Every year, when it is too late for tears, the media reports on animal trauma and injuries to children caused by fireworks. Only by making the right choice now can we prevent these tragedies.
South Africa – land of plenty!
I was leaving for America. I had my bags packed, my tickets ready and my family there waiting for me. Then one morning I woke up and thought 'what am I doing?' I love South Africa. I love my country and its people. There are things here that only a South African could ever understand, such as 300 days of sunshine every year, biltong, putupap, boerewors, chakalaka, sosaties, koeksusters and peppermint fridge tart, not to mention shopping at robots for anything from cooldrinks to coat hangers.
Global warming
Earth is the "Goldilocks" planet. It's neither too hot nor too cold. As a result, our world is the only place we know where water can take the form of a gas, a liquid or a solid (ice).
