Unlike the name suggests, healing touch or therapeutic touch is not a massage therapy, but an energy therapy said to speed up recovery after surgery or injury. It is also a great way to relieve pain.
How healing touch works
Healing touch or therapeutic touch (TT) is described as a hands-on, non-invasive, gentle touch energy therapy. Energy therapy works with the body’s energy fields to support its natural ability to heal.
Healing touch is rather similar to the laying on of hands, the ancient technique from which it is derived. The principle behind it is that illness creates a disturbance or blockage in the energy field that extends several centimetres from the body. The practitioner uses his or her hands to sense where these blockages or disturbances are, removes them and rebalances the energy field to restore health.
The practitioner and client will first do a question-and-answer session where the medical ailments of the client and the energy session itself are discussed. The session itself will then follow. An energy session lasts between 40 and 60 minutes. The client lies fully-clothed on a massage table while the practitioner gently places his or her hands on or slightly above the client.
Medical conditions it can assist with
The relaxing and nurturing effects of TT is effective at reducing stress, calming anxiety and relieving depression. It can be a great support in cancer care.
Because it strengthens the immune system, it is said to enhance recovery after surgery, ease many acute and chronic medical conditions, decrease pain and help for back and neck problems.
The female endocrine system is apparently more sensitive to the benefits of TT and it can be used for the relief of menstrual pain, to treat the absence of periods, during pregnancy to enhance overall health, and to address problems with conception.
